What is Oral Medicine?

Oral Medicine is the speciality field of dentistry that involves the diagnosis, prevention and predominantly non-surgical management of medically-related disorders and conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region, in particular oralmucosal disease and orofacial pain, as well as the oral health care of medically complex patients (Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia).

At Perth Oral Medicine and Dental Sleep Centre, it includes many clinical conditions that broadly fall within three clinical areas:

An Oral Medicine Specialist is a registered dental specialist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Oral Medicine Specialists have completed both a dental degree (Bachelor of Dental Science / Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine) as well as at least 3 years of formal post-graduate training (Masters or Doctorate Degree) in Oral Medicine. It is also a mandatory requirement for registration as an Oral Medicine Specialist to stay up to date with continuing professional development in this field.

Patients who are referred to Oral Medicine typically have complex, non-dental related oral and facial complaints. The unique training of Oral Medicine Specialists provides the necessary knowledge to comprehensively assess, diagnose and manage complex conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.
